THREE volunteers are needed to serve on the body which advises on the running of one of the region’s most treasured buildings.

Durham Cathedral is seeking three new members for the Cathedral Council to serve for the next three years.

The Cathedral Council is one of the bodies jointly responsible for the life and ministry of the Cathedral, alongside the Chapter and the College of Canons.

It has some legal duties in relation to the Cathedral’s finances and constitution, but services mainly as an advisory body – providing external perspectives to guide the Chapter as it develops and implements the Cathedral’s strategies.

In particular, the Cathedral is seeking individuals with a background in fundraising and communications, business and finance and environmental matters.

Council members are welcome from any Christian denomination, and should be able to show an understanding of the Cathedral’s mission and its place within the North East region.

Chapter clerk Philip Davies said: “This is an exciting time in the life of Durham Cathedral, with the opening of our brand new Open Treasure exhibition in 2016 and the arrival of a new Dean both providing new opportunities to take forward our mission – but with continuing challenges to be met in maintaining the Cathedral’s ancient fabric.

“The Council now needs to appoint people to help it in that work for the next three year term, and we welcome enquiries and applications from anyone interested in this role.”

The Council normally meets three times a year. Anyone interested in putting their name forward or want to make further enquiries should email Philip.Davies@durhamcathedral.co.uk

Applicants will need to submit a CV and covering letter, explaining how they would contribute to the Council’s work ahead of the closing date of January 12.

It is hoped that new members will join the March 2017 meeting of the Council.
