A YOUNGSTER who is battling cancer has switched on the Christmas lights in Durham.

Five-year-old neuroblastoma patient Bradley Lowery joined Durham County Council’s chairman Cllr Edward Bell to switch on the lights outside the authority’s headquarters in Durham City.

The young Sunderland fan, from Blackhall Colliery, pushed the button alongside Cllr Bell and Santa Claus to illuminate the trees on the roundabout outside County Hall.

Bradley is currently undergoing treatment for neuroblastoma for the second time in his short life.

He was originally diagnosed at just two-years-old and was declared in remission last year, but this summer the cancer returned and he has been having treatment since.

Bradley said: “I loved switching the lights on because I got to wear Edward’s medal and I got to press the big button and make all the lights come on.

“And then I gave Santa a hug and told him what I want for Christmas – but he already knew because he’s magic.”

Cllr Bell, said: “It was wonderful to meet this brave little lad who has gone through so much but still manages to smile. He’s such a popular youngster who has touched so many people’s hearts and you can see why when you meet him, he’s a joy and it was wonderful to have him here to turn the lights on for us.”

Bradley’s family are trying to raise £700,000 to fund potentially life-saving treatment for him in the USA.
