A ROTARIAN has taken part in a walkathon to raise £3,000 to help the fight against polio.

Former president of the Durham Rotary club David Yates spent 10 hours trekking 120 laps of the grounds of Maiden Castle, on the outskirts of the city.

He said: “This money will result in 15,000 children being immunised against this crippling and potentially fatal infectious disease.

“To everyone who sponsored me can I say on behalf of those 15,000 children a massive thank you.”

The walkathon event was held on the fourth annual World Polio Day and Mr Yates was joined by fellow members of Durham’s Rotary Club and Inner Wheel.

The Rotary Club has been involved with trying to eradicate the disease since 1985, during which time the number of cases has dropped by 99 per cent.
