PLAYTIME looks set to get a whole lot more fun across County Durham thanks to a cash injection of almost £2million.

The investment programme will see 45 play spaces benefit from improvements thanks to funding from Durham County Council (DCC), local members’ Neighbourhood Budgets, Area Action Partnerships, Section 106 contributions from developers, and town and parish councils.

Money is being used to update swings, slides, climbing apparatus, swirl roundabouts and skate parks while a small number of brand new play areas are being developed to meet gaps in provision.

Oliver Sherratt, DCC’s head of direct services, said: “We want to ensure all of our children and young people have access to high quality, fun, safe and accessible play areas.

“In order to do this, we’re working closely with local communities to develop exciting, interesting and inspiring play areas across the county.”

The authority is responsible for the improvements and is working closely with residents and partner organisations to ensure that each project meets the needs of the local community.

The schemes will provide fixed play equipment and promote child development and the benefits of play for everyone.

Cllr Maria Plews, Cabinet member for leisure, libraries and lifelong learning, said: “Play is an important part of children’s lives and we are committed to supporting that with a significant investment that will provide much improved facilities for our younger residents.”

The scheme was officially launched at the play space in Stanley Crook, where Section 106 and play budget funds have funded a new swirl roundabout, climbing apparatus, slide, castle, swing, fireman’s pole, net bridge and access ladder.

Cllr Brian Stephens, Cabinet member for neighbourhoods and local partnerships, said: “Stanley Crook is just one example of the many exciting play schemes set to come, with all providing safe and welcoming play spaces for local neighbourhoods.”

Improvements have already been carried out at 13 locations, with four more in line to be next.

A number of other play spaces will be completed by March.
