AN exhibition that has attracted thousands of people closes this weekend, with last-minute visitors having the chance to win a poignant reminder of the First World War’s most bloody battle.

Durham University’s exhibition, Somme 1916: From Durham to the Western Front, portrays the role County Durham and its people had to play in the battle and in the First World War in general.

Since the exhibition opened in July at Durham’s Palace Green Library, it has attracted visitors from all over the world.

And visitors on this last weekend still have the chance to win a special edition Somme Poppy, made to commemorate the centenary of the battle.

Visitors just have to leave their contact details, and a winner will be picked at random.

The exhibition has been developed by Durham University in partnership with Durham County Council and the trustees of the former Durham Light Infantry (DLI).

It showcases items from the DLI collections alongside other items that have been loaned from regional and national museums.
