A KEEN runner is back on the starting line just four months after a hip replacement operation.

David Lumsdon, from Durham, had a total right hip replacement at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital’s Surgery Centre in Gateshead earlier this year.

But just months later, he is already taking part in events including Parkrun and 5k races.

He said: “I am a keen runner and thought those days were finished with the news that I needed a hip replacement.

“I have followed the physiotherapist’s exercises every day and continue to do them, not easy at the beginning but well worth doing.

“This, coupled with walking as much as I could, has actually allowed me to slip my running shoes back on and start running again”.

Mr Lumsdon thanked staff at the hospital and added: “To all who are about to have surgery, there is a shining light at the end of the tunnel”.

Ward manager Anna Richardson said “Patient experience is central to our philosophy of care at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital so we’re thrilled that David had such a positive experience with us and has now returned to enjoying the sport that he loves”.
