A DURHAM trainee teacher visited Parliament as part of a campaign to make sex and relationship education compulsory in schools.
Harriet Axbey, 19, who is training to be a teacher at Durham University, spoke to MPs about the Terrence Higgins Trust’s campaign to extend compulsory sex education.
She said: “ It was fantastic to have the opportunity meet MPs in Parliament and explain why Sex and Relationships Education is so vital. Lots of schools teach the basics such as contraception, but don’t touch on other important things including consent, pleasure and healthy relationships.
“I feel it’s really important that young people get the information they need for life from a trusted source, so I was pleased to be able to give young people a voice on a topic that’s so important to our wellbeing.”
