A TAKEAWAY which was refused permission for late night opening in June is applying again to extend its hours until 3am.

Babakir Khidir, the owner of Pizza Uno, wants to open the takeaway at 92 Claypath, in Durham, until 3am on Fridays and Saturdays.

This is the second time this year he has applied to longer opening hours.

In June, Mr Khidir’s application to open until 3am every night was refused by Durham County Council because of the potential impact on people living nearby and because it could increase fear of crime.

The takeaway currently has permission to open until 11pm.

Other fast-food premises in the street already have 3am opening.

Pizza King, at 85 Claypath, is allowed to open until then every day while Falafel Al Hana, at number 86, can open until 3am on Fridays and Saturdays.

In June, residents living in and close to Claypath had objected to proposals for longer opening hours for four takeaways in the area because of concerns about antisocial behaviour and litter in the streets.

Durham City MP Roberta Blackman-Woods backed residents, saying it would cause the potential for disorder in the early hours of the morning.

Durham Police had also objected to the application because of policing issues in the area created by late night drinking establishments in nearby Walkergate.

At the time of publication no comments had been made about the current application, which can be viewed by visiting the council’s planning website at www.durham.gov.uk.
