AFTER losing almost 10 stone in a year a man is gearing up to take part in his first Big Ride.

Gary Wilkinson, from Durham, decided to sign up to 10 mile bike ride after changing his life during the last 12 months.

The 43-year-old, who is a care support worker for people with learning difficulties, is raising money for Macmillans.

He said: “It should be fun, though I’ll probably be as stiff as a board the next day.”

Mr Wilkinson, from Gilesgate, had sky high blood pressure, type one diabetes and had to sleep in an oxygen mask when he decided to get a gastric band.

Since then he has lost 10 stone and has started cycling, swimming and going to the gym.

He said: “I was heading to an early grave. It’s all been about re-education. It was hard to start but when you get into it it makes sense. I’m 100 per cent better now, there’s no doubt about it.”

The ride takes place on Sunday, September 4. People can sign up to take part in rides of three, 10 or 25 miles, which all start and finish at County Hall in Durham.
