LABOUR party members in County Durham are organising a debate about its leadership.

The event is being held on Wednesday, August, 31 from 6.45pm in Elvet Methodist Hall, in Old Elvet, Durham.

Graham Morris, MP for Easington, will be speaking on behalf of current leader Jeremy Corbyn while Alex Cunningham, MP for Stockton North, is speaking for challenger Owen Smith.

Organiser Chris Turner said: “Many Labour Party members and supporters across County Durham have felt disenfranchised and had no opportunity to discuss the merits of either leadership candidate.

“I am personally supporting Jeremy Corbyn but others involved in arranging this meeting support Owen Smith or are undecided who to vote for. However, we all agreed we should organise this meeting and invite as many members to it as possible.”

He added: “We have had to pay for and arrange this meeting ourselves and we are not being permitted to contact members directly so we are relying on social media and other groups to publicise it for us.”
