A DURHAM University student is set to be the youngest contestant on this year’s Great British Bake Off.

Michael Georgiou will be taking part in the BBC’s popular baking show, which starts next week.

The 20-year-old is originally from London but is studying politics and economics in Durham.

He says his baking is strongly influenced by his family roots in Cyprus and has been making Greek pastries with his grandmother since he was a small boy.

The second year student lives with four friends and is known for whipping up cakes in the middle of the night.

He is one of 12 amateur bakers who will be taking to the tent and will be hoping his unusual flavours will impress judges Mary Berry and Paul Hollywood.

The series starts on BBC One on Wednesday, August 24.
