SCOUTS spent a day messing around on the river with canoes, rafts and water rockets.

More than 100 cubs from the Durham City group took part in the water-based activities day at Maiden Castle, which went ahead thanks to more than 50 volunteers who helped with transport, cooking, supervising and organising activities.

District Commissioner John Little, said: “The youngsters get a lot from events like this and indeed scouting in general.

“The Cub Water Day and other activities take a massive effort from our volunteers in terms of planning, logistics and supervision. Their focus is ensuring the youngsters have a great time while remaining safe.”

Durham City Scouts is now appealing for new volunteers to help out.

Mr Little added: “There is a common misconception that the only way to help in scouts is if you have experience as a uniformed leader, attending regular weekly meetings. This is far from true and volunteers have huge flexibility in terms of time commitments around their real lives. This means they can just help with a single event or come along to weekly events as suits.”
