THOUSANDS of runners will pound the cobbled streets and riverbanks next week in the inaugural Prince Bishops Durham City Run.

About 2,000 runners will take part in the event on Wednesday (July 20) evening, which follows a looping course through the city centre, finishing in the shadow of the magnificent Durham Cathedral.

The runners are expected to be roared on by thousands of spectators and well-wishers at vantage points lining the route.

The event features two runs, a 10k event and a 5k event, both of which start in Saddler Street at 7pm and follow a circuit taking in the medieval city’s landmarks and banks of the River Wear.

Runners on the 5k event will complete one circuit while competitors on the longer race will complete two laps, with both races finishing in the spectacular surroundings of Palace Green.

Former Olympic champion Steve Cram from Events of the North, who is organising the run on behalf of Durham County Council, said he was excited at the potential of the new event.

He said: “The level of interest in both the 5K and the 10K races has been very high since day one and we’re anticipating a big turnout of runners and spectators on the night.

“They will all be treated to a route that takes in many of the iconic parts of this beautiful city and a spectacular finish on the World Heritage Site on Palace Green.”

The former world record holder added: “We have now added in a ‘King and Queen of the Hill’ challenge to add some fun to the final climb and create a unique finale for our runners.

“It’s shaping up to be a fantastic new event for Durham and the North-East.”

Cllr Maria Plews, Durham County Council cabinet member for leisure, libraries and lifelong learning, said: “Many of the events and festivals we support deliver very welcome economic benefits alongside a terrific feel-good factor.

“In this instance we are also showcasing the beautiful city of Durham so it gives me real pleasure to wish everyone the very best of luck.

“I hope the sun shines but the views will be splendid whatever the weather and the atmosphere looks set to be fantastic.”

Participants will be raising money for good causes as they tackle the undulating course and are being encouraged to support the event’s official charity partner, Barnardo’s, which is celebrating its 150th birthday this year.

Rolling road closures will be in force in the city centre between 6pm and 9.15pm on Wednesday.
