CITY businesses are preparing for a week-long celebration to put independents on the map.

Durham’s business community is holding the event to encourage visitors and residents to make the most of independent shops in the city.

Durham Business Improvement District [BID] is hosting Independents InDurham from July 2 to July 8.

The city has around 190 independent businesses and another 50 independent traders selling from Durham’s indoor market.

Adam Deathe, business engagement manager at Durham BID, said: “Durham is an incredible city; we have an amazing range and number of unique independent businesses which complement the big-name brands, and help to set our city apart from other high streets up and down the country.

“Independents InDurham is a great way to remind everyone what’s available right on their doorstep. There’s a really varied mix of independent businesses offering everything from fashion, home ware and legal services, to holidays, homes and food and drink. These businesses are passionate about what they do and this is a great opportunity for us all to visit Durham city and support them and our local economy too.”

As part of the event businesses taking part will have special offers and discounts to shoppers, which will be promoted through the BID’s website and social media outlets.

This is the second year Durham BID has held events promoting independent businesses.

This year the group hopes to extend activities from last year’s event, which it said had been a success.

Last year a day-long event was held on July 4 – trying to play on the USA’s Independence Day – to encourage more people to shop in the city.

Mr Deathe said: “Across the week we’ll be doing all we can to remind visitors, shoppers and everyone living locally that Durham’s diverse retailers and services combined with its rich heritage, make it a fantastic centre for running errands or even as a great day out with family and friends.”

“Our independent retailers will have access to window stickers with the Independents InDurham logo so you can easily spot these terrific businesses during your visit to the city and show your support over the week and when visiting Durham in the future too.”

The BID is also trying to get more people shopping in the city by promoting later opening on Thursdays, extended Park and Ride opening hours and free parking at the Prince Bishops car park from 3pm to 8pm.
