THE talents of two outstanding young musicians will be on display alongside the voices of the Durham Singers at the weekend.

Francesca Massey, sub-organist of Durham Cathedral and the choir’s assistant conductor and accompanist, will perform at St Cuthbert’s Chapel, Ushaw College, near Durham, at 7.30pm on Saturday July 2.

She will be playing a majestic description of the Scottish highlands, Wild Mossy Mountains by Judith Weir.

The choir begin their concert with Aaron Copland’s In the Beginning.

Copland summons up creation with an expansive mezzo-soprano solo, which will be sung by Marnell Blair - a recent Durham graduate and member of the prestigious Genesis Sixteen and Samling Academy programmes for young singers.

The concert, entitled Our World, includes the second performance of The Light, a piece made entirely in County Durham, with words by poet Gordon Hodgeon, and music by a local composer, Janet Graham.

The concert is themed around the ideas of light and creation, and there is also music by Brahms, Finzi and Howells.

Tickets £12 (£10 students and under 25s, children under-13 free), including summer refreshments after the concert.

Tickets available on the door, from www.durham-singers.org or by calling 0779 0148062.
