VOLUNTEER gardeners have been planting flowers and tidying up their community.
Residents of Grape Lane, off Crossgate in Durham City, joined up with workers from Durham County Council, Durham City Homes and County Durham Housing Group to tidy up an open space at the top of the estate. The group has been working to improve the previously run down area for more than three years.
They spent a day planting flowers and improving the borders around grassed areas within the communal garden zones.
The group is entering the Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) It’s Your Neighbourhood’ scheme while Durham is making a bid in the regional RHS Northumbria in Bloom and national RHS Britain in Bloom competitions.
Cllr Brian Stephens, Cabinet member for neighbourhoods and local partnerships said: “We’d like to thank everyone who took part, especially the residents who will continue to maintain the floral borders and flower beds in future.
“It’s now fingers and trowels crossed for a blooming great result in all three competitions.”
