PRIMARY school children have been raising money to try and tackle animal cruelty.

Pupils at Sherburn Primary School raised more than £300 which they spent on rescued or abandoned animals being looked after by the RSPCA.

The youngsters were taking part in a scheme called the Go Givers make a difference challenge and decided to tackle animal cruelty after choosing the issue which was most important to them.

To raise awareness about the issue they wrote and delivered leaflets to people in Sherburn and made posters for school.

They also raised money for the RSPCA by organising a school dance-a-thon, where children came into school in their pyjamas to dance to their favourite tunes, and collected pennies in jars, raising a total of £302.20.

Teacher Linda Taylor said: “The project is all about making a difference in their community and they have all been working really hard.

“They’ve created lots of resources and had the RSPCA out to talk to them about what they do.

“It’s just been one class but they’ve involved the whole school community.”

After raising the money the children visited Pets at Home to buy things to take to the animals at Felledge Animal Centre in Chester-le-Street.
