FIVE teenagers were arrested following a pursuit involving a police helicopter and road traffic officers last night (Tuesday, May 24).

A Durham Police spokesman said the police helicopter was called in after a silver Vauxhall Astra driving at speed failed to stop for officers on the Newton Hall estate, in Durham.

The spokesman said: “At around 7.50pm on Tuesday residents reported to police that a silver Vauxhall Astra was being driven at speed around Newton Hall.

“A police car was despatched to the scene to intercept the vehicle and the police helicopter was also deployed.

“After failing to stop for police near Sainsbury's, the car was later abandoned in the Newton Hall estate and the occupants ran off.”

He added: “Later in the evening police arrested five teenagers - four male, one female - on suspicion of various driving offences.

“They remain in custody at Durham police station and inquiries are continuing to trace the registered owner of the Astra.”
