A BUSY city roundabout will be fully open following work to improve it.

The traffic lights on the newly upgraded Gilesgate roundabout in Durham city will be switched on after rush hour tomorrow (Wednesday, May 25).

The work has been carried out by Durham County Council as part of the installation of the new £2.5 million SCOOT system, which is meant to improve journey times through the city.

The roundabout now has an extra lane, two new crossings and wider footpaths for pedestrians and cyclists.

Work on the nearby Leazes Bowl roundabout is ongoing and is expected to be completed by the end of September.
