DURHAM has made it onto The National Lottery’s rich list and has been named as one of the luckiest places to live.

A new "lucky town" sign was unveiled at Durham Cathedral after it was revealed as one of the luckiest postcodes in the UK.

The National Lottery has revealed that 13 millionaires have been made in the Durham postcode area in the last five years.

And during the last 10 years, 93 people have won a cash prize of £50,000 or more – equating to someone winning big almost every month.

Durham has been named as the 20th luckiest postcode out of 121 across the UK.

Andy Carter, senior winners’ advisor for The National Lottery, the man who pays out the big winners, said: “The Durham postcode is certainly a very lucky area.

“There are now a massive 4,250 National Lottery millionaires across the country and with more than 6 new millionaires made every week there is likely to be another local winner made soon.”

Last year 60 grants worth £3million were distributed to projects in County Durham, including workshops for unemployed people run by Teesdale YMCA, improvements to Willington Cricket Club’s building and a sheltered outdoor area for children at Crook Nursery School.

The National Lottery raises more than £34million each week, which helps fund Olympic athletes, arts and heritage and community projects.
