A SHOPPING centre is to introduce free parking to mark the launch of late-night shopping.

Retailers in Durham city centre will extend opening hours into the evening every Thursday starting this week in a drive to improve footfall in its stores.

Now the city’s Prince Bishops Shopping Centre has announced that parking will be free between 3pm and 8pm every Thursday for the foreseeable future.

Several stores within the centre including Boots, BHS, H&M, Next and Monsoon are taking part in the late-night shopping initiative.

Richard Toynbee, Centre Manager at Prince Bishops, said: “We are delighted to support the late night shopping initiative by offering free parking from 3-8pm.

“By commencing the tariff from the middle of the afternoon the hope is to encourage shoppers to enjoy what the city has to offer for even longer.”

Adam Deathe, from Durham Business Improvement District, said: “Free parking in the city centre on Thursday evenings is going to be a huge boost for Durham’s businesses.

“It’s a fantastic opportunity for people to come into the city and take advantage of the new late night opening starting this week”.
