A LIGHTING firm that has worked on the London Olympics, the London Eye, St Paul’s Cathedral and HMS Victory has been chosen to illuminate Durham Cathedral’s new visitor attraction.

London-based Sutton Vane Associates, which has also worked with the National Museum of Ireland, the National Museum of Saudi Arabia and the British Museum, will design and install the lights at the £10m Open Treasure facility, illuminating the Monks’ Dormitory and Great Kitchen.

Open Treasure project co-ordinator Tom Billington said: “Open Treasure is world-class not just because of the importance and value of the collections that will go on display here, but because of the quality of the craftsmanship of the work that will allow these magnificent spaces to effectively showcase the exhibits.

“Spaces as beautiful as the Monks’ Dormitory and the Great Kitchen deserve to be shown off in their full glory and this can only be achieved with the best lighting scheme, which is why we’re delighted to be working with Sutton Vane Associates, whose track record reads like a who’s who of the heritage world and speaks for itself.”

Mark Sutton Vane, the firm’s owner, said: “I feel humbled to be working on such a magnificent, world-class building.

“The light is designed to reveal the new exhibition, to make it stand out and reinforce the stores that the exhibition is telling.”

Open Treasure will open this spring. For further details, visit durhamcathedral.co.uk/open-treasure
