A CATHEDRAL priest has written a song to support an octogenarian’s bid to be named the nation’s tourism superstar.

Durham Cathedral Canon Rosalind Brown’s Song 4 Lilian makes the case for 87-ear-old Lilian Groves, a volunteer senior tourist guide at the Cathedral, to be named Visit England’s Tourism Superstar 2016.

Set to the tune of John Darwall’s 148th, it was performed by choristers on Monday (February 1).

The lyrics praise her 25 years’ service to the Cathedral and reference thank you letters she has received from across the world.

James Randle, director of music at The Chorister School, said: “Given that Durham is a place of song, we came up with the idea of writing a song to help Lilian’s campaign.

“It has been wonderful to support this campaign and we encourage everyone who loves Durham and the North-East to vote for Lilian to be their Tourism Superstar 2016.”

A retired teacher, Miss Groves was named County Durham’s Tourism Superstar 2015 and has been shortlisted for the national prize.

The winner will be decided by a public vote, which is open now. To vote for Miss Groves, visit vote4lilian.com

The winner will be announced in early March.
