THE rules deciding how school places are allocated across County Durham look set to remain unchanged for another year.

Under the current system, for the 2015-16 academic year 97.5 per cent of primary school pupils and 98.3 per cent of secondary school pupils received a place at “a school of their preference”.

The application process for 2016-17 is under way and Durham County Council’s cabinet will be asked to agree to continue the same arrangements for 2017-18 when it meets on Wednesday (February 10).

Councillor Ossie Johnson, the council’s cabinet member for children and young people’s services, said: “The current admissions system for community and voluntary controlled schools is ensuring that almost all pupils receive a place at a school of their choice and so we would look to continue in the same way.”
