A POPULAR and long-standing snooker club is to close this weekend (Saturday, January 30).

The future of Durham City Snooker and Pool Centre has been in doubt since plans emerged to demolish its premises, along with others at 18-29 Claypath, and build a 445-bed student block.

Student Castle has planning permission for the £50m scheme, Kwik Fit garage is to move to a new retail park Dragonville, Warm Sanctuary has already moved to Carrville and the acclaimed Oldfield’s restaurant closed at New Year.

Last summer, snooker club boss Eddie Rhodes said he had a lease from his landlord Kwik Fit until December 2019 and intended to stay put until then.

However, in an announcement on the club’s Facebook page, he said it would close for the final time at 11pm on Saturday (January 30).

“I’m not sure if I’m happy that I’m finally retiring or sad that the club I opened in 1995 with the very much appreciated help of family and the significant contribution from my dear late wife of 28 years, Alice, who we sadly lost on 26th October 2003 (is to close).

“However, I would like to thank all the members and guests who have supported the club over the last 21 years and especially my son Michael, Shirley and Carly, and all the other dedicated staff that have worked for us over time during the years.”

Student Castle aims to have its new student accommodation ready for September 2018. Although no date has been announced, demolition is expected to start on site very soon.
