A CATHEDRAL stonemason has been commended for his paperwork.

Steve Mann, who works at Durham Cathedral, was awarded the York Guild of Building Medal for outstanding written work while training.

Mr Mann, from Ushaw Moor, near Durham, said: “It was a great surprise to find out that I had been awarded the medal and it’s something I’m very proud of.

“I love being a stonemason and Durham Cathedral is such a fabulous building to be working on, especially at this exciting time with Open Treasure due to open in Spring 2016.”

Mr Mann now plans to study for a foundation degree in personal and professional development in stonemasonry.

He added: “I enjoy pushing myself further and I’m really embracing the new challenges but I also want to pass my skills on. By handing down my own expertise to new stonemasons it is like creating a legacy that will hopefully keep standards high in our industry.”
