MORE than 200 hats have been knitted for charity following a library appeal.

Durham University’s Palace Green Library asked people to knit, crochet or sew hats to be sold to raise money for Walking with the Wounded, a veterans’ charity.

As a result hats were sent from as far away as the USA.

The project was inspired by the library’s exhibition Antarctica: Explorers, Heroes, Scientists.

Hats can be donated until Monday (November 30), at the library, Woolaballoo in Hexham or at the Woolaballoo stall at the Knitting and Stitching Show in Harrogate from Thursday to Sunday (November 26-29).

The hats will be sold for a suggested donation of £15 each at the library and Durham Christmas Festival. Barclay’s Bank has agreed to match fund the first £1,000 raised.

Julie Biddlecombe-Brown, exhibitions officer at the library, said: “Thank you to everyone who has been knitting, crocheting and sewing hats for us.

“From fun children’s hats with ears to beautiful hats made with hand-spun wool, the sheer variety of hats we’ve received is amazing.

“Buying one of these unique hats is a great way for people to raise money for a fantastic cause whilst wrapping up warm for winter.”
