PART of a main feeder road into and out of a city centre will be closed, from Sunday, November 29.

Motorists are advised that part of Dryburn Road, in Durham, which provides the main access into the city centre from northern suburbs of Framwellgate Moor and Newton Hall, will be closed for essential resurfacing work.

It will mainly be carried out on Sunday, but with completion work due to take place over two subsequent night stints.

Durham County Council will carry out the work from Aykley Heads roundabout, which feeds the police headquarters and the University Hospital of North Durham, along Dryburn Road down to County Hall roundabout.

Both Aykley Heads roundabout and Dryburn Road southwards will be closed from 7am on Sunday, into the following morning, with the reopening scheduled ahead of morning rush hour, at 6am on Monday, November 30.

Further closures, to allow completion of the work on Dryburn Road, will be in place over the following two nights.

These will be from 8pm on Monday and Tuesday, until 6am on each of the following two mornings.

John Reed, the county head of technical services, said the work is part of the council’s essential road maintenance programme.

“Drivers will need to use an alternative route while this resurfacing work takes place.

“We appreciate this is a busy route so we are carrying out this work on a Sunday and overnight, when traffic levels tend to be lower, to try to minimise disruption.”

The work should be concluded by 6am on Wednesday, December 2.
