A CYCLIST is in hospital with serious injuries after a collision with a bus in Durham city centre last night.

The incident took place at 9.20pm on New Elvet, an area which was busy with people attending the Lumiere festival.

The cyclist, a 31-year-old man is in the Royal Victoria Infirmary in Newcastle with serious injuries.

Police said the collision involved an Arriva bus and are appealing for any witnesses to contact the investigating officers from the Collision Investigation Unit on 0191-3752159 and quote incident reference DHM14112015-0481

Nick Knox, area managing director for Arriva North East said: “We can confirm that on Saturday an Arriva bus was involved in an incident with a cyclist on Hallgarth Street, Durham. 

"Sadly the cyclist suffered injuries and was taken from the scene in an ambulance. 

"Safety is always our top priority, we are working closely with the police to investigate exactly what happened."
