A MOTORCYCLIST who broke his back in a horror crash hopes pioneering medical treatment will help him stand again on his 30th birthday.

But Andrew Bell, 29, needs the public’s help to pay for the £50,000 procedure, which includes surgery, stem cell treatment, physio-, occupational, aqua- and oxygen therapy and a microchip being inserted into his back at Bangkok’s Better Being Hospital.

His brother, Rory Bell, has started a GoFundMe online fundraising campaign, which has already raised £12,000.

Andrew, of Durham, would be the first person to undergo the treatment so soon after an accident. He suffered four fractured ribs, a dislocated sternum, fractured eye socket, punctured right lung and two fractures to his spine just three months ago.

At the time, he had metal rods inserted into his back and medics said he would never walk again.

But he said: “The hospital are hoping that because my accident happened recently that it would be beneficial for me to do the treatment as soon as possible because my leg muscles, bladder and bowel functions are still strong.

“I quickly realised that I could sit around and cry for weeks hoping someone was magically going to come and fix me or I could face up to what has happened; grit my teeth and accept its only me who can fix me, so let’s get going.

“Since day one of my accident I’ve been extremely positive within myself. As soon as I was told I couldn’t walk again that instantly lit a fire inside me to prove the doctors wrong. I’m a firm believer in the idea that if you want something bad enough, work hard and believe then anything is possible.”

Before his accident, Mr Bell took part in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, played football and ran half-marathons.

He hopes to fly out to Thailand for treatment on November 5 and stand up by his 30th birthday on December 8.

“Being able to stand on my 30th birthday would be the best present I could ever ask for and I’m extremely excited to start the treatment and hopefully get my legs going again and get my life back.”
