A MUSICIAN has appealed for help in recovering his beloved cornet - believed to have been stolen from his shopping trolley at the weekend.

Clive Madgin of Belmont, Durham City, said he was shopping at Tesco Extra in Dragonville, Durham City, when the instrument went missing, at about 2pm on Sunday.

He said the cornet was taken from his trolley as he made his way back to his car after shopping.

The silver-plated “sterling” instrument had a short crease near the bell, while its black wooden case had a fastening clasp missing.

Also in the case was a mouthpiece made by Denis Wick, which could be specially converted for use on a trumpet as well.

Mr Madgin played for many years in the Savoy Jazz, which was disbanded in 2000.

He said: "I have played this instrument for the last 20 years and it is of great sentimental value to me.

"If anyone has the cornet or has information about the cornet I would most appreciate getting it back."

Anyone with information should contact Durham Police on 101.
