A NOT-FOR-PROFIT initiative that helps disabled people learn woodwork skills has supported more than 130 in its first year.

The Wood Pile Community Interest Company (CIC) salvages waste wood to create and “upcycle” furniture, at its base in Dragonville, Durham City.

In its first 12 months, it has supported more than 130 people, including 45 intensively; with 11 finding work, 46 completing a furniture course and 29 taking part in a range of workshops.

A total of 275 tonnes of waste wood has been saved, with 876 pieces of furniture restored.

Director Karen Stubbings said: “We are so pleased to be celebrating a year at The Wood Pile – we don’t know where the time has gone.”
