SPORTING memorabilia is going on show in the North-East ahead of the Rugby World Cup fixtures coming to the region this weekend.

Durham University’s Palace Green library is showcasing the semi final and final match balls from England’s winning campaign in 2003.

The ball from the semi final England v Wales will be displayed until Friday, and will be replaced by the match ball used in the final against Australia.

The exhibition is also accompanied by footage of key moments in England’s 2003 semi-final and final matches including Jason Robinson’s run to set up Will Greenwood’s try in the semi final and Jonny Wilkinson’s last minute drop goal which won the World Cup against Australia.,

England fans will feel deflated following a disappointing result against Wales, but are hopeful to replicate a similar result of the 2003 final when they meet Australia this weekend.

The exhibition comes in the wake of the first World Cup match held in the North East taking place this Saturday, when South Africa take on Scotland at St. James’ Park in Newcastle.

New Zealand play Tonga on 9th October and the Scots are in action again against Samoa on 10th October at the same venue.

Director of Culture at Durham University Dr. Keith Bartlett said, ‘With the Rugby World Cup matches coming to the region this October, we’re excited to get involved with the national Festival of Rugby celebrations.

The Rugby ball display at Palace Green follows other Rugby related exhibitions in the North-East including ‘Rucking All Over the World’ at Newcastle’s Discovery Museum.

Entry to the exhibition at Palace Green Library is free and is running until Sunday 4th October.
