EMOTIONS witnessed among people awaiting and seeing off loved ones at airport terminals is captured in a new photographic exhibition, opening today (Friday September 4).

The 16 black and white images making up the display, Terminal, at the Town Hall, in Durham, are the work of North-East photographer Katherine Cuthbertson.

She has experienced at first-hand the highs and lows of the airport terminals, usually, in her case, at Newcastle, with her young son and daughter, either bidding farewell or eagerly awaiting the arrival of her work-away husband, Neil.

“For years I have seen and taken for granted the families in the airports and train stations, with tears in their eyes, as once again they say their goodbyes to loved ones travelling away from home.

“The dads, husbands and granddads who have to leave their families for weeks, even months, leaving little ones, hiding their emotions.

“Grandparents, mothers, lovers and others, all patiently waiting for their treasured ones.

“The images are an illustration of the tender wait and compassionate relief that takes place while waiting at terminals for the return of absent treasured ones.”

She said all her subjects are aware of what she is doing and, none, yet, have objected on hearing the ‘click’ of her camera, but if they did, she would happily desist.

The Sunderland University graduate will welcome anyone interested in viewing her images, at a launch event in the reception area of the Town Hall, in the Market Place, between 5 and 6.30pm tomorrow (Friday September 3).

Her exhibition runs throughout September and can be viewed during all opening times at the Town Hall.
