A CATHEDRAL garden will be open to the public as part of the Heritage Open Days.

Durham Cathedral’s garden on South Bailey, Durham boasts a range of flowers but is usually closed to the public.

It is used to grow flowers and plants for cathedral grounds.

It will be open for viewing on Saturday, September 12 from 10am to 4pm.

Head gardener Geoff MacCallum said: “This is another hidden part of Durham.

“You can see the Victorian walls which helped establish how long the garden has been here. Heritage Open Days is the only time that the general public get to see the garden.

“From the 1960s the garden has been used and owned by the cathedral for the growing and cultivation of the flowers and plants.”

Entry is free and gardeners will be present to answer questions. For further details, visit durhamcathedral.co.uk/whatson
