A POPULAR choir is preparing for a new season of rehearsals and concerts.

The Durham Choral Society, the biggest choir in the Durham area, welcomes singers of all abilities to practise and perform some of the world’s best loved choral works.

The group performs in Durham Cathedral twice a year, as well as giving a keenly anticipated Christmas concert and singing carols at the University Hospital of North Durham.

The society rehearses at Durham Johnston School on Wednesdays at 7.30pm and the first meeting of the new season will be on September 2.

There are no auditions. The ability to read music helps but is not compulsory. Score hire is available and practise recordings are available to buy and use at home.

The choir’s January 2016 concert in Durham Cathedral will feature two contrasting works: William Walton’s Belshazzar’s Feast, premiered at Leeds Festival in 1931, and Faure’s Requiem, a favourite of choirs across the country.

May’s cathedral concert will showcase Paul Mealor’s Stabat Mater and Howard Goodall’s Eternal Light: A Requiem.

An Evening of Festive Music will be held in Elvet Methodist Church, Old Elvet, Durham on Saturday, December 19.
