FIREFIGHTERS and council staff have been working together to get across the message to families to stay safe around water over the summer holidays.

Teams from Durham County Council and County Durham Fire and Rescue Service have been speaking to families visiting the popular Riverside Park in Chester-le-Street to advise them about water safety issues.

They have been trying to raise awareness of issues such as the effect of cold water shock on swimmers and the dangers posed by underwater obstacles such as tree branches.

Advice is also being offered on the danger of swimming after drinking alcohol and trying to persuade people not to assume that because they can swim in a pool they can cope with the challenges of open water swimming.

Mark Lee, from Durham County Council, said: “We’re pleased to have had the opportunity to team up with the fire service to highlight vital water safety messages and promote safe alternatives to the river.

“As we enter the summer holiday period we would remind parents and families about the benefits of choosing to swim in a safe, supervised location.”
