A QUIZ night will be held to help one of the region’s best brass bands travel to the national finals.

Bearpark and Esh Colliery Band has qualified for the National Brass Band Championship Finals to be held in Cheltenham in September.

The band qualified for the finals by winning second place in the 4th Section Regional Contest held in March, with the piece An English Pastorale by Dean Jones.

The band was formed in 1950 by eight men who each contributed £8 to start an instrument fund and continued despite the closure of both Esh Winning and Bearpark mines

Members say they will struggle to meet the costs of transporting the band down to Gloucestershire and are raising funds and have organised a series of fund raising events, including a race night at Waterhouses Village Hall and a variety of performances in Durham and South Shields.

On Friday (July 31), the band will hold a fund raising pub quiz at the Royal Oak in Lanchester starting at 7.30pm. Entry is £2 per person, with profits going to the fund raising drive.

On Sunday (August 2) they will perform a concert at Saltburn Bandstand at 2.30pm and will again be hoping to bring in more money for the cause.
