A SCHOOL for girls celebrated its end of term today (Tuesday, July 7) with a concert by a boy band – raising hundreds of pounds for charity at the same time.

The Waiters, made up of Adam Tait, Dan Johnson, Martin King and Jack Errington, made an appearance at Durham High School for Girls in Durham City.

The acoustic set raised about £800 for Cash For Kids.

School charity co-ordinator David Smith said: “The idea of the charity event and to invite The Waiters was that of two of our year nine girls - Emily Ross and Megan Lightfoot.

“The Waiters have been connected with Metro Radio collecting money for the Cash for Kids and the students had been researching the charity to find out more about it.

“They decided to hold the concert in aid of the charity on the last day of term today.”

About 200 students paid to see the concert, while some bought tickets to “meet and greet” the band members.

The pupils also had a sweet and cake stalls, a guess the name of the bear competition and other charity stalls.

Mr Smith said: “I think the girls were really excited about the concert and really enjoyed the chance to let their hair down at the end of term.”

The South Shields band were awarded the Young Performer of the Year at last year’s Pride of South Tyneside Awards.

After winning a Metro Radio Competition they went on to perform at the station’s Christmas Live concert alongside Ed Sheeran, Labrinth, Ella Henderson and Nicole Scherzinger.
