RETIRED and other former policemen and women are invited to join serving officers and their families for a force’s special anniversary celebration.

Durham Police is holding the big mid-summer bash to commemorate it reaching 175 years since its formation.

It will also mark the successful recent transfer to its new headquarters building, near the former base, on the Aykley Heads Estate, in Durham.

The £1.4m environmentally-friendly building was officially opened by the Princess Royal on a visit to the region earlier this month.

As part of the move to the new complex the force has decided to restore its annual reunion for retired officers to the calendar.

A free event, with activities and entertainment to appeal across the generational divide, it is open to both current and retired officers, staff and their families.

The event programme, from 1- 4pm on Sunday June 21, includes a display of force vehicles, plus demonstrations by police dogs and their handlers, as well as firearms officers.

Visitors can also run the rule over the police helicopter and its crew, while there will also be a display outlining force’s history and showcasing the modern-day organisation.

Youngstars can meet Say No to Strangers’ campaign support dogs Jet and Ben, with handler, community support officer Claire Kerr.

There will be performances by the Durham Constabulary brass band and male voice choir.

Members of the National Association of Retired Police Officers should contact Angie Crawford, on 0191-518 0996, for tickets.

Non-members should speak to Colin Appleby, on 0191-584 6178.

The deadline for applications is Monday June 8.
