A DARLINGTON dog is in the race to be crowned the nation’s most heroic hound.

Cocker spaniel Vito is a major contender in a competition to discover the Pet Hero of 2015.

The inspirational pup lives with the Dixon family and provides vital assistance to schoolboy Thomas, who has cerebral palsy.

He was trained by Dogs for the Disabled and helps Thomas in a number of ways – from getting ready in the morning to carrying his bag to and from school.

Thomas said: “When we got the phone call from Dogs for the Disabled telling me about Vito, I couldn't believe how lucky I was.

“Meeting Vito for the first time was the best day of my life.”

His mum, Lisa Dixon, has been similarly impressed. She said: “We’re so lucky to have Vito, he’s so loving and caring and gives Thomas someone else to talk and relate to.

“He also helps us as parents, giving us some relief and a positive focus.”

PetSafe’s Pet Hero 2015 competition winner will be announced in December.

Anyone who would like to nominate a deserving pet for the accolade should send their pet’s name, photograph and a brief explanation to bit.ly/PetSafePetHero before Tuesday, September 15.
