RESURFACING works will start on two sections of the A1(M) in County Durham on Monday for four weeks.

The southbound carriageway between Carrville and Shincliffe will be closed to allow the work to be carried out safely and efficiently.

During the resurfacing work the northbound carriageway will run three lanes, with lane two for southbound traffic and the hard shoulder, and lane one for northbound traffic.

All of the resurfacing will be done overnight between 8pm and 6am, Monday to Sunday.

A 50mph speed limit will be put in place for the duration of the work.

Work to resurface the hard shoulder between junction 63, Blind Lane Interchange, to junction 62, Durham, will take place at the same time. The junction 62 southbound entry slip road will be closed during the overnight work.

Throughout the day the junction 62 southbound entry slip road will be reduced to one lane, and a give way will be in place for the duration of the works.

On the first two nights of the scheme - June 1 and 2 - the north and southbound carriageways of the A1(M), from junction 61 to 63, will each be closed on separate nights to allow for the safe installation of the traffic management.

During the closures traffic will be diverted from A1 junction 63 Blind Lane - adjacent to Chester-Le-Street - along the A167 before returning to the A1 via the A688 and A1 junction 61 at Bowburn.

The same closures and diversions will be in place on the final two nights of the scheme to allow for the traffic management to be removed. The dates of the closures will be signed in advance.

Highways England project manager, Chris Corcoran, said: “The work will lead to an improved, smoother and quieter surface for road users, and reduced traffic noise for those living nearby.”

The work is planned to be completed by Monday, June 29.
