MOTORISTS are warned of carriageway and slip road closures and a lowered speed limit on the A1(M) over four weeks from Monday (June 1).

The southbound carriageway of the A1(M) between Carrville and Shincliffe, County Durham, will be closed for resurfacing.

The northbound carriageway will carry three lanes – two northbound, including the hard shoulder, and one southbound.

A 50mph speed limit will be imposed throughout, although all work will be done overnight between 8pm and 6am.

Work to resurface the hard shoulder between junction 63 Blind Lane interchange at Chester-le-Street and junction 62 Belmont interchange at Durham will take place at the same time.

Hence, the junction 62 southbound entry slip road will be reduced to one lane during the day and closed overnight.

The north and southbound carriageways between junction 63 and 61 for Bowburn will be closed overnight on separate nights on June 1 and 2 to allow traffic management measures to be installed.

These closures will apply again on the last two nights of the work to allow the measures to be removed.

Diversions will apply along the A167 and A688.

Highways England project manager Chris Corcoran said: β€œThe work will lead to an improved, smoother and quieter surface for road users and reduced traffic noise for those living nearby.”

The work should be completed by Monday, June 29.
