FOLK legend Kathryn Tickell will perform at a former training college for priests which is opening its doors to the public.

The Northumbrian piper and fiddler is bring her band The Side to St Cuthbert’s Chapel of Ushaw College at 7.30pm on Saturday (May 23).

Kathryn Tickell has become one of the North-East's most celebrated artists. She is is currently recording and touring with her new folk-classical ensemble The Side, comprising Louisa Tuck (cello), Ruth Wall (harp) and Amy Thatcher (accordion, clog dancing).

The concert at the weekend is part of a programme of music and events that has brought 4,000 people to Ushaw since it started last Autumn.

Both the buildings and gardens will be open to the public on Saturdays, from noon to 5pm, with a gift shop and cafe running during those hours.

It includes entry to the chapels, refectory and exhibition hall, with admission free.

Visitors will also have the chance to view the medieval chasuble, a vestment worn by the Archbishop of Westminster, Cardinal Vincent Nichols, during the recent funeral ceremonies for King Richard III in Leicester.

Tickets for the concert are £12 and are available from the box office at Durham’s Gala Theatre, but can also be bought on the door on the night.
