A CITY’S volunteer tourist guides are back for a new season.

The Durham Pointers, easily identified in their pink tabards, will be on hand to help visitors find their way around the city centre daily until September.

More volunteers are still needed, as the service has been extended to 9.30am to 3.30pm Monday to Friday, 9.30am to 1.30pm on Saturdays and 11am to 3pm on Sundays. Pointers are required to pledge two hours per fortnight from May to September.

Senior co-ordinator Esther Ashby said: “This is our fourth year of pointing in Durham.

“There are many who have volunteered throughout, but also this year we welcome several new Pointers.

“By extending our service to cover weekends, we’re not only able to help more visitors, but we’ve been able to welcome keen volunteers who can help us cover the seven day service.

“We speak to visitors every day and are often thanked for the service we provide. In fact, many people tell us that the Pointers make a huge difference to a visit to Durham and they wish their home city provided a similar service.”
