A MEDIEVAL manor house attraction has expanded to welcome its ever-growing number of tourists.

Despite being tucked away near the river banks of Durham, Crook Hall and Gardens has become a top North-East attraction, hitting about 35,000 visitors last year.

With such a high customer demand, owners Maggie and Keith Bell felt it was time to secure planning permission to expand the attraction that was once just their home.

The owners say the new visitor centre, including a cafe, will enable customers to visit the attraction without paying the hall entrance fee, where they can try the food and acclaimed afternoon tea.

The opening has been a success so far, and is motivating the owners and staff to continue bringing their once hidden gem into the light.

General manager Nicola Sutcliffe said: “It has now been open fully for over a week now and we are loving it. The response and feedback from visitors has been amazing and we couldn’t be happier with how it is going so far.”

The popular wedding venue is currently preparing for its Fairytale Week, taking place from May 25 to 28, when visitors can meet their favourite fairytale characters and join them on a treasure trail.
