A CATHEDRAL hopes to encourage the next generation of supporters with the launch of a new scheme for young professionals.

Durham Cathedral is to launch its Young Patron programme with a reception on May 21.

For £5 per month, patrons will be able to take part in behind-the-scenes tours of the cathedral, attend film screenings in the Bell Tower and receive invitations to book launches, private views, talks and lectures.

They will also receive discounts in the Cathedral Shop and Undercroft Restaurant and invites to annual Young Patrons’ Party.

Sophia Stovall, development officer with the cathedral, said: “Currently, very few of our supporters are young professionals, yet we know that Durham Cathedral has a special place in the hearts of so many, be it because they have grown up here in Durham, been a student here, attended services in the church, or they are simply an admirer of this internationally renowned Cathedral”.

She added: “This new programme is aimed at those aged between 25-40, and will help Durham Cathedral meet the challenges of preserving this wonderful building’s cultural, social and historic heritage.

“In return, you can get closer to the Cathedral’s past and play a role in helping shape its future.”

The scheme will be launched with an evening of music and film at the cathedral on May 21 from 6pm to 9pm. For further information, please email sophia.stovall@durhamcathedral.co.uk
