PAVING stones honouring a county’s First World War heroes have been delivered to the area.
The stones honour the seven men from County Durham awarded the Victoria Cross (VC) for their actions during the 1914-18 conflict.
They will be the centre of For Valour, a new exhibition which opens at the DLI Museum and Durham Art Gallery in Durham City next month (May).
Each is inscribed with the soldier’s name, rank, regiment and the date of the action for which they received the VC.
They will eventually be laid in the town or village where the soldier was born or brought up.
Cheryl King, Durham County Council’s museums, heritage and collection manager, said: “We’re very pleased to have taken delivery of the commemorative paving stones as they really do form the heart of the new exhibition.
“All of our VC recipients performed extraordinary acts of courage, risking and in many cases losing their own lives in the process.
“For Valour aims to honour and remember their bravery and sacrifice.”
