THE first night of a pilot scheme to breathalyse drinkers at the pub door has been hailed as a success.
Durham’s City Safety Group bought 30 of the breathalysers for use at six city centre pubs and clubs following the death of three Durham University students in the River Wear within 15 months.
The tests were used for the first time last night (Wednesday), launching a 12-month pilot scheme.
Carol Feenan, the city centre manager, said the kit was used at Jimmy Allens and Loveshack on several occasions and to “positive effect”.
“Trade on a Wednesday evening is mainly student dominated and all of the students who were asked to undertake a test were good natured about being asked and complied willingly,” Ms Feenan added.
The tests will also be used at The John Duck, The Fighting Cocks, Whisky River and Wiff Waff.
Anyone more than twice the drink drive limit could be refused entry.
