DURHAM University Business School has unveiled its first ever Dean’s Award to mark its 50th anniversary.

The inaugural award was presented to Sir George Russell for his outstanding contribution to UK business, the North-East economy and in recognition of his longstanding support for the school.

Sir George’s roles have included chief executive of Alcan, chairman of ITN and chairman of Camelot.

He has served on Durham University’s Business School Advisory Board and continues to advise the school’s fundraising activities.

To celebrate the business school’s 50th birthday, a celebratory dinner was recently held in Durham Castle.

Professor Rob Dixon, Dean of Durham University Business School, said: “Sir George is a talented businessman who has led some of the UK’s largest businesses but, although he has reached the top of his fields, he has also demonstrated a deep commitment to education and community.

“He is a worthy recipient of our first Dean’s Award and I’m proud to present it to him. For future generations of aspiring business leaders, Sir George is someone they can learn from.”

Prof Dixon added: “As we reflect on where we stand in our 50th year, we are very proud of what we have achieved and where we are heading.

“The school offers a first-class business education with an ever-growing range of dynamic, engaging and relevant programmes on offer both at undergraduate and postgraduate level. We are investing heavily in recruiting respected academic talent.

“With 130 academic staff, we now offer a critical mass of world-class research expertise, creating a dynamic learning environment across many business areas, from accountancy and finance to entrepreneurialism and leadership.”
